We all need a job to pay our bills and put food on the table. Some dream of winning the lottery to escape that reality, but the odds are slim. And now, with AI reshaping the world, even “safe” jobs aren’t really safe anymore. Companies cut costs by replacing people with technology, and many of us start wondering: what happens if I lose my job?
That question hit home for me. I realized I needed a safeguard — something deeper than just another paycheck. I called it my “anchor.” Today, I know the real word for it: my WHY.
I’ve had more than 40 jobs in my life, never fully sure what I wanted. Growing up, we were told to get an education and a stable job. But is that actually security anymore? No — and that uncertainty is real.
On top of that, I started thinking about retirement. I never planned much for it. I always figured the state pension would be there when the time came — but can I really trust that anymore? Governments change, rules change, and the future isn’t guaranteed. That worry became another reason I needed something I could actually rely on.
My journey began in Denmark, where I was born in 1966. After my confirmation, my mother took me to Spain, and I fell in love with it. By 1988, Spain became my dream destination to live and work. It took 13 years before I made progress. In 2001, I moved to Sweden, and by 2010, I finally made the move to Spain with a close friend.
Life was good, but that question never left me: what if something happens? I had no backup plan, and no family left in Denmark to fall back on. I needed that anchor.
Then COVID hit. Overnight, our jobs were gone. We found new work in Portugal, bought a house, and later sold it when the market surged. That gave us the freedom to buy two campervans and live as digital nomads — a dream finally in motion. But once again, the jobs disappeared.
This time, I knew I couldn’t rely on luck or temporary fixes. I needed something solid — a way to build real freedom, something that could carry me not just now, but into my older years as well.
This is my WHY.
It’s not just about income. It’s about freedom. It’s about living where I love, helping others, and enjoying life as a digital nomad. My WHY keeps me steady, no matter what happens. It’s the reason I push forward — to stay true to myself, build my own security, support others, and live fully.
